Plantain Seedling Nursery
ACL in collaboration with Kumad Global Impact Limited, also a wholly owned Ghanaian company, have pulled together varied resources to set up Ghana’s largest seedling production center in support of the Ghana Cocoa Board Cocoa Rehabilitation Program. Spanning over 400 acres of land, the nursery has the capacity to produce over 100 million plantain seedlings, with room for diversification into the production of other seedlings.
The initiative started with the announcement by the cocoa regulatory body to address the issue of the Cocoa Swollen Shoot Virus Disease that had spread out in some of the cocoa producing districts in Ghana, killing the cocoa trees, and causing an overall reduction in the volumes produced as a country. An estimated 136,000 hectares of cocoa farmlands have been affected by the disease. This meant that the affected farms had to be rehabilitated primarily to stop the spread and to replant those farms with quality cocoa seedlings. However, as overbearing sunlight can be damaging to young cocoa seedlings, it was necessary to plant some protective trees alongside the cocoa seedlings.
The two indigenous companies, with in depth understanding of the cocoa landscape in Ghana pulled together their expertise and resources needed to establish a multi-purpose seedling nursery that would raise millions of plantain seedlings to meet the replanting targets. Why Plantain? Plantain is a giant herb which can provide protective cover for cocoa seedlings. The canopy plantain provides closes after about 5 to 6 months of planting. The large branches protect the cocoa seedlings from the damaging sun rays.
Additionally, the produce of plantain can be harvested as early as 9 months after planting. This means that although the cocoa trees which originally serve as the main source of livelihood for cocoa farmers are being replanted, they have alternative produce which will be ready for sale on the market 9 months after planting. The beneficiary farmers, through this, are being provided with sustained incomes as they wait to for the cocoa seedlings to mature into fruit bearing trees.
With the magnitude of the project, it is very likely that the local markets will be flooded with plantain, contributing immensely to food security in the country and falling in line with ACL’s objective of contributing to the achievement of the SDG 2 – Zero Hunger”.
Diseased Cocoa Tree Cutting
ACL through its provision of a wide range of farm management services provides tree cutting, arboricide application, land preparation amongst other services in support of the Cocoa Rehabilitation Program. ACL has over 2000 staff working in designated districts within the Western North region of Ghana, cutting the diseased cocoa trees. All staff are provided with the necessary protective garments to ensure their safety during the delivery of their tasks.
The services we provide start from farmer education where necessary on the CSSVD, how it spreads and how we can protect the areas not yet reported as having diseased cocoa trees by stopping the spread. The farmers are also compensated for before the trees are cut.
We employ weeders whose primary role is to clear the diseased cocoa farms ensuring visibility of the diseased cocoa trees. They basically clear the paths for the chainsaw operators. They are given protected garments to reduce any risk of injury and provided with slashers which ensure efficiency in the delivery of their services. The chainsaw operators are then able to maneuver through the diseased cocoa farms freely and cut down the diseased cocoa trees.
Finally, the arboricide applicators stationed in the various districts apply arboricide on the diseased cocoa tree stumps to prevent regrowth of the diseased trees. This is the final stage at which the spread of the virus is stopped.
To ensure field efficiency, all our staff are equipped with the proper equipment to aid the delivery of their services.
Impact
Through both of our key projects, employment for over 4000 people have been created. The economical growth in the districts has been pleasing to watch as no one legally able to work has been left out whether employed by the company or benefitting from the provision of services to the staff of the project, a notable mention being the food vendors. Other service providers such as equipment manufacturers, hydrological contractors, building contracts, fuel providers and many more have greatly benefitted from the projects, some being engaged locally and others all over the country and internationally.
